Sunset Surf Session – Nova Scotia

Here is a few shots from Wednesday night’s Sunset Surf Session in Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia. It’s been pretty bleak in the way of swell for quite a while, so it was nice to finally see some swell pushing in. I didn’t see a single person in the water who didn’t have a smile on their face. The sunset was an added bonus, and what a bonus it turned out to be.

Open Mic Night at the Armview

Here’s a few shots taken this Sunday at the Open Mic Night at the Armview Restaurant and Lounge. These hugely talented musicians, and more, played a vast range of tunes easily washed down by a couple of cold ones and a bite to eat. Well worth a visit on a Sunday night.

Night Shoot

After attending a hugely informative 3 day photography course recently, which focused strongly on using off-camera flash, the decision was made to head out and try and put it in to practice. With a course colleague also eager to head out and experiment with the techniques we’d been listening to, we found our spot, and got shooting. Below are a sample of the shots I took on the night. Having the flash set from the side, below, behind or where ever you wish to set it up creates some interesting effects and countless possibilities when trying to compose a shot. More shoots will be happening in the near future…..

Road Trip – Maple Syrup Hunt

This weekend we went on a road trip to partake in the good old Canadian tradition of visiting a Maple Farm. The last signs of Winter were there to be seen, but equally matched with signs of the coming Spring. The day involved the staple of pancakes, maple syrup, a hike with more syrup. Below are a few shots from our day trip, with good friends to celebrate something quintessentially Canadian.

Coast Path Walk

Here’s a few shots taken today along the coast path at the Herring Cove Provincial Park Reserve. There’s some nice rockpools that make some interesting reflections for shooting. It was a lovely day for February, but the snow shot works as a reminder that we’re a way off spring time yet.

Home Shoot – 50mm

Here’s a few shots taken over the weekend with my Canon 50mm lens. Being mid winter in Atlantic Canada, the opportunity for getting outdoors to shoot some portraits are limited, so it was a case of making do with bath time. I’m really looking forward to using this lens during the upcoming wedding season. It’s a fantastic lens which copes in poor lighting situations, which makes it a must have in the camera bag.

Chocolate Lake Sunset

This is a shot taken tonight in the centre of Chocolate Lake in Halifax. It’s only a minute walk from our house and is a great place to swim in the warmer months. In winter it can get good for skating, like it was today, and you’ll find kids playing hockey wherever the ice is smooth enough. To capture the motion of the fast moving clouds, I used an ND filter on my camera which enabled a 30 second exposure.

One Hour Photo

My spare time for getting out and snapping shots has been a little limited these days. Having a young family is time consuming, there’s no way around it, but it’s also the most amazing gift in the world. It just means getting out there and doing the things you want in any time slots available. This afternoon was one of those moments. It was an amazing day for late January in Atlantic Canada, unseasonably warm and sunny. I had my one hour time slot, and restricted to the general area of the Halifax Dockyards. So it was a case of parking up, choosing one lens (10-20mm Sigma) and getting snapping and the following are the results. It was quite refreshing to have the decision process restricted to one location, one lens and one hour….

Surf Day Photo Shoot

There was some excitement leading up to the weekend due to some pretty decent looking surf reports. The strong winds brought with it a healthy amount of ground swell which got a lot of the local spots working. I managed to find enough time to get my fix in the sea for a surf and behind the lens snapping some shots, which has become a rare event. Here’s a few of the action shots and beach scene shots from yesterday. The persistent snow flurries and overcast conditions made things a little tricky for shooting, but mid January in Canada it could have been a lot worse.
